Finding information on earning a GED or high school equivalency certificate in each of the United States can be difficult since different agencies handle adult education state to state. This series of articles lists the links for each state, including which test each state offers.
On January 1, 2014, the GED test, formerly used by all 50 states and available only on paper, changed to a new computer-based test, opening the door for other testing companies to offer similar high school equivalency tests. Three tests are now common:
- The GED, developed by the GED Testing Service
- HiSET Program, developed by the Educational Testing Service (ETS)
- TASC (Test Assessing Secondary Completion), developed by McGraw-Hill
The state where you live determines the test taken to earn a GED certificate or high school equivalency certificate. Individual test takers don't make that decision, unless the state offers it.
When the GED Testing Service changed to computer-based exams, each state had the choice of staying with the GED or switching to HISET, TASC or a combination of programs. Most states offer prep courses, and most, if not all, are free to the student. Courses are available online from a number of sources, some of which are free. Others have various costs involved.

Alabama
GED testing in Alabama is handled by the Alabama Community College System (ACCS) as part of the Department of Postsecondary Education. The information is available at accs.cc. Click on the page's Adult Education link. Alabama offers the 2014 computer-based test provided by the GED Testing Service.
Alaska
The Alaska Department of Labor and Workforce Development handles GED testing in the Last Frontier. The state has continued its partnership with the GED Testing Service and offers the 2014 computer-based GED test.
Arizona
The Arizona Department of Education administers GED testing for the state. Arizona has also continued its partnership with the GED Testing Service and offers the 2014 computer-based GED test. Check out the links at the Adult Education Services page.
Arkansas
GED testing in Arkansas comes from the Arkansas Department of Career Education. The Natural State has also continued its partnership with the GED Testing Service and offers the 2014 computer-based GED test.
California
The California Department of Education handles GED testing for its residents. California has approved the use of all three high school equivalency tests: the GED, HiSET and TASC. The California GED website offers plenty of helpful links for prospective test-takers.
Colorado
The Colorado Department of Education administers GED testing in the Centennial State, which continued its partnership with GED Testing Service and offers the 2014 computer-based GED test.

Additionally, Illinois welcomed two alternatives as well, the HiSET and the TASC exams.
The GED test is computerized and comes with four individual modules (subtests) that can be taken one by one within a 2-year time frame.
The four testing fields are Literacy (Reasoning through Language Arts), Social Studies, Math (Mathematical Reasoning), and Science.
The HiSET and TASC include five subtests (separate reading and writing subtests) that can be taken both on paper and on a computer and also individually.
In Illinois, test takers must additionally take and pass the Illinois Constitution Test.

Illinois GED requirements
In Illinois, applicants are eligible to take the GED exam if they meet these guidelines: They must be 17 years of age or older, not are high school or GED graduates, and have lived in Illinois for no less than thirty days. If applicants are of school age and have been engaged in a school setting (public, private, or at home) during the last 12 months, they are required to submit a signed withdrawal letter from the school they attended prior to taking the GED exam. Individuals who take the GED exam need to present acceptable identification that least shows their names, addresses, dates of birth, signatures, and photographs. Acceptable forms of identification are a valid driver’s license, a valid passport, a military ID, or a government-issued (state, nation or foreign) ID such as passports.
Who is the GED exam for?
The GED program is developed to assists men and women who never got a high school diploma with becoming sufficiently prepared so they can acquire their GED credential and improve their job options and gain access to colleges, universities, and training and trade schools. In addition to the four GED subtests, applicants must take and pass the United States and Illinois Constitutions exam. The GED exam is available in English, French, and Spanish, and after passing the GED test you will be awarded the Illinois High School Equivalency Diploma.
GED changes
The changes in the GED program (only available on computer, and a price tag considerably higher) have sparked many discussions in Illinois about how to best deal with the needs of the state’s 1.6 million residents who never completed high school. There are states that dropped the GED test for the purpose of measuring high school equivalency. The GED organization states that the price hike was needed to create and administer a new and better program that assesses a candidate’s readiness ‘s for a college education or the contemporary workforce.
The passing score on each of the four GED subtests was lowered by five points to 145 just two years after the latest GED test was implemented.
